Hip JointThe structure of the hip joint makes it a ball and socket joint. It consists of the head of the Femur (thigh bone) and the acetabulum of the pelvis (the hip bone). The ball is formed by the dome-shaped head of the femur which fits into the socket of the acetabulum. The tight fitting of the bones and the strong surrounding ligamets and muscles make the hip joint a very strong joint.
Causes for Hip painCommon causes for a hip pain include arthritis, Trochanteric Bursitis, Tendonitis, Osteonecrosis, Lumbar Pain , Snapping Hip Syndrome, Muscle Strains, Hip Fracture and Stress Fracture. Arthritis is the most common cause for Hip Replacement surgery.
DiagnosisThe first step in diagnosis of a hip pain is taking of your medical history by your doctor wherein the doctor tries to isolate the cause for pain as well as reviewing any other underlying complaints to base the line of treatment. Also the doctor may observe the hip at rest and while standing or walking, palpation (or feeling) of the hip and surrounding structures, testing for range of motion and strength, and checking for sensation and pulses. Blood tests and imaging of the hip (-ray, CT, MRI) and surrounding tissue may be done. Please send x-rays of AP and Lateral views of your hip joint, to get a free opinion from hip replacement surgeons in India.
Hip Replacement ProcedureOsteoarthritis often referred to as "wear-and-tear" arthritis is the most common type of hip arthritis. In it bare bone is exposed by the wearing away of the normal smooth cartilage. Severe hip pain which needs a total hip replacement surgery, is most commonly caused by this osteoarthritis. A surgical intervention called Total Hip Replacement (THR) may be done in which the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials called the prosthesis or implant. The procedure involves replacement of the diseased ball (the head of the thigh bone) and socket (acetabulum of the pelvis) with a metal ball and stem inserted into the femur (thigh) bone and an artificial plastic cup socket. The prosthesis is fixed with a bony cement upon inserting the prosthesis into the central core of the femur. Alternatively a ‘cementless’ prosthesis is also employed, this prosthesis allows bony ingrowth from the normal femur into the prosthesis stem through its microscopic pores. This cementless hip is suited especially for younger patients and is considered to have a longer life.
Rehabilitation and PhysiotherapyThe recovery of the patient is quite dependent on the physiotherapy sessions post hip replacement surgery. Completely equipped physiotherapy and rehabilitation centres can be availed of at our network hospitals with well-trained and experienced staff. Your treating doctor plans all the sessions with and proper guidance given at every step. Rehabilitation after hip replacement begins immediately post surgery. As soon as the surgical procedure has been performed, patients start working with a physical therapist. Maintaining motion of the hip replacement is the prime motive in the early stages of rehab and also to ensure that the patient can walk safely.
BenefitsThe hip replacement operation is known to be one of the most reliable operations in orthopaedic surgery. It has been documented that it consistently reduces or eliminates the pain of the arthritis in most patients. Marked reduction in pain and improvement in sleep, regaining range of motion, physical ability, and quality of life are some of the important benefits of a Total Hip replacement surgery.
