Cervical Disc Replacement
What are Cervical Discs
The Cervical Spine envelops the spinal cord and protects the spinal cord. Its structure consists of vertebrae or the small bones, which are called as C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7. There are discs in between the vertebrae which act like ‘shock absorbers’, thus also helping in the mobility of the spinal column.Cervical Disc Replacement
Treatment of degenerative cervical disc problems is done by the procedure called cervical disc replacement. This procedure aims at preserving the cervical spinal movement and also to prevent neighboring disc overload and subsequent degeneration. Contra-indications for this procedure include cervical spine instability, significant facet joint damage or infection.Symptoms like pain, weakness and tingling in the neck and arms are caused by pressure on the spinal cord due to rupture in the cervical disc. Dehydrating or drying out of the discs because of some disease or aging process lead to this condition. Discs loose their height and the space between the vertebrae’s narrows down because of this degeneration the, and as a result they cannot act as shock absorbers.
Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery
Once the conservative treatment is not providing any relief from the pain or dysfunction, this treatment option of artificial disc replacement is recommended. An artificial cervical disc implantation is done in this procedure which eases the compression of the spinal cord caused by the damaged discs. The design of the prosthesis is such that range of motion is allowed without any difficulty.Procedure
A complete physical examination is done prior to the planning of the surgery to assess the overall health. Removal of the damaged or diseased discs by making an incision in front of the neck, followed by its replacement by an Implant or prosthesis is done in this operation by the operating doctor. The design of the prosthesis is such that range of motion is allowed without any difficulty and it also enables motion without any restriction.Symptoms
Herniated disc and/or bones spur called osteophytes, are the primary cause of the problem which presses on the adjacent nerve or spinal cord. Spine level C4/C5, C5/C6, C6/C7 are typically affected by this condition. Symptoms caused because of cervical disc degeneration are as follows:- Pain in neck and arm
- Weakness in arms
- Numbness of arms and hands
Post Surgery
Rigorous pursuing of specifically designed recovery plan is important to better outcome post surgery. A physiotherapist would meet and plan an exercise programme during the recuperation in the medical facility that will help in improving the strength and mobility of the neck. To protect the neck from any strain or injury a lot of emphasis is paid on the different ways and postures of standing, sitting or lifting. Regular tests are to be done for a few weeks after discharge from the hospital, to ensure that the healing is occurring in proper fashion.Inclusions
